Online Credit Services & Pay Per Download Sites
While there are ways to set up merchant accounts that cost, if you’re only accepting credit cards online, you should be able to do this free. PayPal is the obvious leader in this category.
Keep in mind there are other ways to sell your art online, besides taking an order and shipping something out. Musicians have several pay per download sites they can host their music on. Artist do as well.
In fact, Sansietch uses one of these site, called Stage.fm, to host his music and sell individual song downloads. The site sells them and you get the lion’s share! You handle nothing. How easy is that? Their charging systems are usually smooth and easy for your customers as well.
See Sansietch’s download page!
Besides providing a hands-free and clean, safe environment for my customers, it does more. It also creates linked movement on your site (bored visitors are a click away from leaving you altogether!) And it pools you with other artists on a site that gets lots of visitors…
Not only will you have an online credit card account to keep track of, but you’ll need to watch the money at your pay per download site, as well as at any advertising and affiliate sites you’ll make money off.
Remember that without the large budgets of a corporation behind you, you must use guerilla tactics. Today, online, you can build a steady income doing your art, and instead of getting millions to see your ad at the superbowl halftime, you get ten people here, and two hundred there, and another 50 over there…
Spread yourself out on the web as many ways as possible. Six months to a year from now it’ll all add up.
Does this website run itself? Unfortunately not. But once set up the maintenance will take little more than a couple hours every week. Unless of course you’re shipping out orders!
1. Often these merchants will also have banner exchange type programs. Don’t hesitate to set these up while you’re there. If someone clicks their link you’ll make money!
2. Make yourself familiar with the type of information these sites gather. This is your source for customer information including shipping addresses and emails, etc.
3. StageFM lets me know not just how many people paid for and downloaded my music, but how many listened as well. If a lot of people listen to a song and don’t download it, should I put up another song? (The kinds of great questions marketers love to deal with!)
Set up a free merchandise account. This needs to be something that fits your site. If you look on Sansietch’s old webpage, you’ll see that CD cases are offered. Simple enough, and those come through an account to buy merchandise at cost. What is applicable to your site and your product?
There are sites that will host a store front for you. Sell, collect, ship, etc., and all you have to do is link to your storefront. CafePress is such a site. Goto the merchandise page on the new website and click on the link. Artwork, CD covers, whatever you like can be put on all these products and sold here. How about your logo?
